For Clarinet (soloist), Strings, Percussion, and Live Electronics (2024)
Undone Landscape – for clarinet, strings, percussion, and live electronics – is a 24-minute piece in six movements written for Kinan Azmeh and The Knights. It premiered at The Clark Art Institute (Williamstown, MA) on Aug. 31, 2024.
Undone Landscape was inspired in part by the aesthetics of Chinese landscape painting from the 11th to the 14th centuries. The composition was informed by the tension between striving and letting go, with an overall movement throughout the piece from effortful to effortless.
For the electronics, pre-recorded samples of members of the orchestra are manipulated into new musical patterns via live coding.
Undone Landscape was made possible with funding from The New York State Council for the Arts and support from Millay Arts, Yaddo, and Avaloch Farm Music Institute.
