A composition for strings in homage to the photographer Minor White
Sequence for Minor White is an homage to the work of one of the most influential American photographers. It's flexible, modular form is made of eight overlapping movements inspired by Minor White's images and his writings on the creative process.
Important to White was the arrangement of images into sequences. He wrote that "to engage a sequence we keep in mind the photographs on either side of the one in our eye." Sequence for Minor White is an attempt to translate this visual multiplicity into music. The movements hang like still images, each overlapping with its neighbors in time.
Sequence exists in a version for quartet and a version for orchestra.
Sequence for Minor White was commissioned by Eric Jacobsen for Brooklyn Rider and premiered on Oct 17, 2017 At Roulette Intermedium, Brooklyn, NY. It appears on recordings by Brooklyn Rider and Beo String Quartet.
The string orchestra arrangement of Sequence for Minor White was commissioned by Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra and premiered May 13, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church, Santa Monica, CA.
